What is a pyrolytic oven?

As with all kinds of technology, ovens have improved dramatically in the 21st century – bringing with them a variety of new and endlessly convenient features.

One of these features has helped create the self-cleaning oven – also known as a pyrolytic oven. These ingenious appliances are very clever devices that can clean themselves, saving homeowners a lot of effort maintaining their ovens over time.

Leading pyrolytic ovens, like the I-Turn Haier Series 6, also bring a range of benefits – including Wi-Fi connectivity for smart functions, Climatech to ensure an equal spread of heat across your food, and Cook with Me, a feature of the hOn app that gives you over 300 written recipes and 50 video recipes to keep your meals fresh and exciting.

But what exactly is a pyrolytic oven? And how do they work? We’ve put together this useful guide to introduce you to self-cleaning ovens and how they can help you.

How does a self-cleaning oven work?

As the name suggests, self-cleaning ovens are ovens that – in effect – clean themselves. Whereas historically, ovens needed to be wiped down with cleaning products, pyrolytic ovens can speed up the entire process, with no need for oven cleaner or other solutions.

They do this by heating the interior of the oven to around 400℃ which burns any residue, marks or grease into ash. Once the oven cools down, you can reach in with a brush and brush the excess ash away – saving you from the hassle of scrubbing and scraping with a cloth.

The Haier Series 6 goes up to 430℃, making for an even cleaner and more hygienic oven after every single programme run.

Many models even have different programs for self-cleaning, which offer lighter cleaning operations right through to rigorous options which take longer, but can deal with heavier residue.

What are the benefits of a self-cleaning oven?

There are a range of benefits that a self-cleaning oven brings to your kitchen, beyond the obvious. Here are just a few of those in action:

Time savings

Self-cleaning ovens can save you huge amounts of time cleaning your appliance, taking as little as just an hour and a half to burn up any marks or leftovers in their interior. This is much quicker and easier than having to finish things off yourself.

Effort savings

Nobody enjoys having to scrub away at persistent marks left by food and grease in the oven. It’s one of the more arduous tasks in the kitchen, so to have an appliance that does it all for you with just the touch of a button makes everything much smoother.

Chemical-free

Oven cleaner can be particularly powerful stuff, and if you’d rather not use chemicals where possible, you might prefer self-cleaning ovens as an alternative. Pyrolytic ovens using heat instead of chemicals to keep things cleaner, helping you skip out all of those potentially dangerous substances.

Energy efficiency

Pyrolytic ovens have to have good insulation to ensure they can reach the high temperatures they need to burn the residue away. This means they are much more energy efficient because the insulation holds in the heat they need to also effectively cook food.

What should I consider when buying a pyrolytic oven?

You’ll find an array of different models of self-cleaning oven on the market. It can be hard to find the right one for you – here are three things you should look out for:

Self-cleaning programs

Different models have different sets of self-cleaning programs for you to choose from. Some are shorter than others, which might take a while, so be sure to pick the right one for you.

Size

As with all ovens, you’ll want to carefully think about how much food you’ll be making in yours. If it’s a lot – to feed a family for example – go for a larger model.

Energy efficiency

If you’re on a budget, or if you’re concerned about your environmental impact, check the oven’s energy rating to see whether it fits your budget or requirements.
